A tribute to Odette Gartenlaub

Odette Gartenlaub (1922-2014),

who studied composition with Henri Büsser,

Darius Milhaud and Goffredo Petrassi, was the

sixth woman to win the Rome Grand Prix for

musical composition in 1948. She was also a

renowned teacher, a professor at the

Conservatoire Supérieur in Paris (who initiated

the 1976 reform in the teaching of music theory),

as well as an exceptional pianist whose virtuoso

playing captivated audiences with its rich tone

and musical intelligence.
